Govt approves purchase of 500 ventilators to treat COVID-19

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: The Afghan government approved the funding for the purchase of 500 ventilators, as the country–along with many other nations– is in dire need of the lifesaving devices to treat COVID-19 patients.

The approval was made at a National Procurement Authority’s meeting chaired by President Ashraf Ghani, the Presidential Palace said in a statement.

Funding for the construction and renovation of health facilities, worth Afs313 million ($4 million), was also diverted from the renovation of Jabal Siraj Palace and Paghman Palace and instead allocated to health centers and hospitals, said the statement.

Funding was also approved for the purchase of COVID-19 testing kits, the statement said, adding that in total 48 procurement cases worth Afs12.5 billion ($164 million) were approved in the meeting.

Sources told TOLOnews last month that the country’s hospitals have around 300 ventilators and some of them are not in working order.

The COVID-19 cases are on the rise in the country, nearing 1,800. (TOLOnews)
