Govt confirms release of 98 Taliban prisoners on Sunday

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: The National Security Council’s spokesman Javid Faisal in a tweet on Monday confirmed that 98 Taliban prisoners were released on Sunday.

The aim of the release is to speed up the peace process and prevent the coronavirus outbreak within the prison, said Faisal.

On Saturday night the government announced the release of another 98 Taliban. According to the Office of National Security Council, the Afghan government so far has released more than 748 Taliban inmates from the jails.

The Taliban demand the release of 5,000 members jailed by the Afghan government, which was mentioned in the US-Taliban peace agreement signed in Doha on February 29. The agreement called for the Taliban to release 1,000 detained Afghan security force members. The Taliban so far have released 112 Afghan government forces. (TOLOnews)
