Govt paralyzes LRH in the name of MTI: PHC

PESHAWAR: Chief Justice Peshawar High Court Justice Qaiser Rashid remarked that largest hospital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) has been paralyzed in the name of Medical Teaching Institution (MTI) Act by government and added that government cannot deny responsibility in the name of MTI, on Wednesday.
The divisional bench comprising of Chief Justice PHC Justice Qaiser Rashid and Justice Ijaz Anwar hearing writ petition of minor patient namely Muhammad Ali seeking government’s grant for treatment aboard. The counsel for petitioner Muhammad Taif Khan Advocate along with Assistant Attorney General Taufeeq Qureshi, Additional Advocate General Syed Sikandar Shah and Special Secretary Health Atta Ullah appeared before the court.
The counsel Muhammad Taif Advocate informed that the petitioner is facing disease which has resemblance with Thalassemia but its treatment is not possible in Pakistan. He added that parents of the petitioner are poor and cannot afford aboard treatment while requesting for government financial grant.
Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid remarked that if minister and government officials can obtain aboard treatment from national exchequer then why should not common man? Chief Justice inquired from Special Secretary Health that court had directed to established specialized hospital for Thalassemia, the secretary informed that establishment of Thalassemia Center at Khyber Medical University in final stages.
Chief Justice PHC remarked that a center cannot meet the demands and court’s seeking establishment of a state of art center for Thalassemia patients because ward or simple center will not fulfill the requirement of patients due to large number. Chief Justice Qaiser Rashid remarked that senior professors are leaving which has closed cardiology department at LRH compelling patients to visit private hospitals.
Chief Justice inquired from Special Secretary that is you are aware about your responsibility because you are dealing sensitive matter like health. He also inquired from Assistant Attorney General regarding step taken by federation on court’s directions. Additional Attorney General informed that he will submit report to the court in this regard on behalf of Federal Government while PHC has also issued notices to Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal and Chairman Ushr & Zakat Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to appear before court on next hearing.
