Govt suspends heavy fines on motorways, highways following transport strike

LAHORE: The government has suspended the heavy toll tax and fines on motorways and national highways after public and goods transporters held a nationwide strike on Jan 2.

The government negotiated with the transporters promptly and withdrew the notification to the new fines. The authorities have notified motorists and police authorities of suspending transporters’ hefty fines.

It should be noted that the government imposed a fine of Rs10,000 for overspeeding on motorways and national highways and Rs 5,000 for overloading.

On Jan 2, Transporters marched from Babu Sabu to Nasir Bagh to lodge their protest against hefty increase in fines by Motorway and National Highway Police.

Transporters of all major cities including Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, Faisalabad, Nankana Sahib, Mianwali and Hyderabad participated in the strike which increased difficulties for commuters.
