‘Govt’s peace offer specific and clear’

KABUL: The Presidential Palace on Tuesday said the unity government had presented ‘a specific and clear peace offer’ to the Taliban and politicians’ comments on the matter were their personal views.

On February 28, the national unity government asserted it desired to strike a “truthful and sustainable peace deal” with the Taliban who were ready for reconciliation. However, there has been no formal response from the Taliban to the government’s peace offer, but informally the rebels had poured cold water on the invitation.

Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan Gulbuddin (HIA-G) head, Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, in an interview with New York Times, said that besides the peace offer, the government also promised granting peace provinces to the rebels.

However, Dawa Khan Minapal, a spokesman for the president, said it was personal views of politicians to comment on the peace offer.

He told Pajhwok that the government had presented a specific and clear peace proposal to the Taliban. “Everything is clear in this proposal and people were informed about it in the Kabul Process conference”, he said.
