Heavy snowfall shuts busy Salang Highway

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: The busy Salang Highway, linking Kabul with northern provinces, was blocked for heavy traffic as a result of heavy snowfall on Thursday morning, an official said.

The highway — passing through treacherous mountains in Parwan and Baghlan provinces — connects nine provinces with the central capital. Lt. Gen. Mohammad Rajab, the highway maintenance commander, told Pajhwok Afghan News the road was closed after a snowfall of 45 centimetres in southern and 25 centimetres in northern of parts of Salang.

He said the trucks had been stopped in Khanjan district of Baghlan and the Jabul Saraj town of Parwan. He added the highway would reopen when the incessant snowfall, which began in the morning, stopped.

In the winter, travelling the highway is dangerous for passengers due to heavy snow and cold weather.
