Heroic Rescue: Police Officer Swims to Save Elderly Boaters off Tasmania’s Coast

WYNYARD, Tasmania, February 8, 2025 – In a dramatic late-night rescue, a police officer swam through treacherous waters to save an elderly couple after their boat ran aground off Tasmania’s north-west coast.

The 13-metre vessel, carrying a man in his 70s and a woman in her 60s, struck rocks near Wynyard just after midnight on Friday. Hours later, as the boat began taking on water around 5:45 AM, worsening conditions prevented police vessels from reaching the stranded pair.

A Westpac rescue helicopter was deployed, and a police rescue swimmer was winched into the water. Battling the waves, the officer swam to the boat, escorted one crew member to shore, then returned to save the second person.

No Injuries, But a Stern Warning

Miraculously, both individuals escaped unharmed and did not require medical assistance.

“Tasmania police urges everyone to ensure they are well prepared before heading to sea,” Inspector Adam Spencer stated, emphasizing that even seasoned boaters can face unexpected dangers.

This morning, the couple is making arrangements to retrieve their damaged vessel.
