Honey export potential
The continuous downturn in exports is one of the major worries of the present government. But the decision makers are indecisive how to tackle the chronic problem of sagging exports by exploiting the full potential of certain commodities in which Pakistan still enjoys a significant comparative advantage over its competitors despite the extremely unfavourable economic environment caused by the highest cost of doing business.
Beekeeping and delicious taste honey extraction is still a cost effective business enterprise although it lacks proper facilitation by the government. But even then the small entrepreneurs involved in this business succeed to get honey production of 27,000 thousand tones from two species of bees ApisMellifera and ApisDorsata. The climate and forest ecology is highly congenial for increasing the number of Bee colonies and substantially boosting honey production. The white color honey extracted from Beehives in Gadoon, Buner and Bajur has a unique taste which is far superior to the Honeybee of Canada and Langeese brand of Germany which is available in markets of Pakistan.
Bulk of the honey production is exported to Saudi Arabia and Gulf States. The export markets of South East Asia and Europe can be accessed if facilities are provided for quality testing and refinement. PCSIR Laboratories Complex of Peshawar has already reduced the quality testing fee. The facility can also be provided in the centers of this organisation in Gilgit, Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi to facilitate the export of honey that can meet international quality standard. European Union has given duty free access to their markets for exports from Pakistan under the Generalized Scheme of Preferences (GSP plus) from maximum benefit needs to be taken before its duration expires.
