Hunger suicides spike in Afghanistan

KABUL (Agencies): With global attention riveted to Ukraine, crises in places like Afghanistan go largely unnoticed. Roughly six months after the Taliban’s takeover, more than half of Afghanistan’s population now faces severe hunger. Since August, reports of suicide have tripled; three or four people commit hunger suicide every day.
“Families are selling their children to provide food for the rest of their family members. There are no jobs; people are hopeless,” says Pamir. “Afghans are crying out for the world to hear them, and they feel the world has once again forgotten about them.” Pamir is one of the Afghan believers featured by MNN’s sister ministry Prayercast on its new podcast called OneVoice. Each week, Afghans share firsthand stories of what’s happening around them.
“Afghanistan is living under the reign of terror,” Pamir says. “After 20 years of children being able to become educated, of girls being able to study and women being able to work freely, it is so difficult to see the veil of darkness put back onto the lives of Afghans.” Subscribe to OneVoice here, or search for it – OneVoice, all one word – on your favorite podcast provider. Most importantly, pray. “Pray for the situation of the famine,” Pamir requests. “Please pray for the Taliban, that God may break their stone hearts and use the Taliban to bring peace into the land. Nothing is impossible with our God.”
