F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has announced that Senate Chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani is eligible to hold the position of acting president in absence of the president of Pakistan, on Monday.

According to details, Justice Amir Farooq of IHC announced the reserved judgment on a petition, challenging eligibility of the chairman of the senate that contended Sanjrani ineligible to assume office of the acting president under Article 49 of the Constitution.

The petition maintained that the minimum age of the president is 45 years under the Law, but the incumbent chairman of the senate is underage.

The petition was filed on June 21, 2018, and the IHC reserved its verdict on February 14, 2019.

Sanjrani was elected as Senate chairman on March 13, 2018 through secret balloting by securing 57 votes against the then ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) candidate Raja Zafarul Haq, who managed to bag 46 votes only.

Born on April 14, 1978, 40-year-old Sadiq Sanjrani is youngest-ever head of Pakistan s upper house of the parliament.
