LAUSANNE: International Olympic Committee (IOC) banned Russia from the 2018 Olympics on Tuesday over state-sponsored doping, however the IOC allowed the Russian competitors to compete under strict conditions.
Russia were banned after IOC examined the evidence the state-sponsored doping over several years that reached a high-point at the Winter Olympics hosted in Sochi, Russia, in 2014.
Several nations were barred from taking part in the Olympic in the past notably South Africa but none has ever been handed a blanket ban over doping.
IOC announced the banned on Tuesday and adding that Russian athletes, however, would be able to take part in the Games, as independent competitors under the Olympic flag.
