Iran nuclear issue

Written by The Frontier Post

Iran has made an other breach to its commitment to Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and officially told the world through an announcement on Saturday. The Iranian government announced that it has started up advanced IR-6 and IR-5 centrifuges that enrich uranium more quickly. It further said that Iranian Nuclear agency has begun mechanical tests on a faster nuclear centrifuge IR-9, whose output in operational mode would be 50 times quicker than the first Iranian centrifuge, the IR-1. According to reports, Iran’s nuclear agency is also developing IR-8 centrifuges. Iranian media reported that President Hassan Rouhani officially inaugurated the cascades of 164 IR-6 centrifuges and 30 IR-5 devices at Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment plant in a ceremony on the eve of National Nuclear Technology Day on Saturday.

While addressing the ceremony, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that Iran nuclear program is for “peaceful and civilian” purposes. While calling the West, he said that it should not be worried about Iran’s nuclear technology. According to him, the West themselves have used this technology, therefore they think that Iran will do the same. On other side, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Iran had violated the limits on its stockpile of enriched uranium, while hinting an occurrence of a violation to the JCPOA by the Iranian side.

The 2015 Nuclear deal was made possible after the years long deliberations between Iran and big powers Including USA, Russia, China, UK, France and Germany. It was a great achievement and the whole world hale this remarkable milestone. However, the United States exited from the deal in 2018 and in placed economic sanctions and built huge pressure against Iran . Trump administration was hoping that Iran would bend to its demands and US would be able to include Iranian missile program under international monitoring beside addition of more strict conditions on Iranian Nuclear Program under JCPOA in exchange of relief in economic sanctions.

However, the United States exceptions proved to be false, because Iran did not budge to the American pressure rather followed counter strategy by breaching of it’s obligations under JCPOA methodically in a tit for tat move. Iran started enrichment of it’s Uranium stockpile at 14 times the JCPOA cap of 202.8 kilograms at the rate of 20 percent Uranium-235 instead of permitted limit of 3.67 percent under the JCPOA. It was a clear signal to the US and it’s allies that if they did not live up to their promise, the same could be done by the Iran.

Earlier, both Countries held indirect talks through European Union as intermediary in Vienna on April 6, just few days back. During these indirect talks both Countries agreed to form two working groups in a bid to get both states back into the compliance of JCPOA. However, both Countries were insisting each other to act first. Iran wants the US to remove all sanctions at once first whereas United States wants the Iran to cease it activities first. However, the outcome of the indirect talks was encouraging and things were heading in right direction. The recent violation of JCPOA by the Iranian government Is a surprising move for the world and no reason has been reported so far. Apparently, it seems to be a pressure tactics by Iranian government to gain maximum leverage during the ongoing indirect negotiation with the United States. However, the pores and coins of the latest Iranian move would be define by the coming days.
