ISPR approaches Facebook over removed accounts

Monitoring Desk

ISLAMABAD: Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has approached Facebook administration over blocking of several accounts, groups, and pages that the social media giant alleged belonged to the ISPR employees.

The military’s PR wing has said that the accounts were not controlled by ISPR and it was disappointing that the social media network even suggested that.

It further questioned Facebook’s act of shutting down accounts that raised their voice for the Kashmir issue and were supporting the struggle of Pakistan’s armed forces.

ISPR also said that Facebook does not understand the environment and the context of Pakistan, as it does not have an office in the country. It urged the company to open an office in Pakistan to have better communication on issues.

Two days ago, Facebook announced to have taken down 103 Pakistan-origin accounts, pages, and groups for manifesting ‘coordinated inauthentic behavior’ and stated that these accounts belonged to the ISPR employees.

It further stated that this takedown was not due to sharing questionable content but only because of the conduct of those accounts.

It needs to be noted here that Facebook clearly stated that it cannot say whether the organization was behind these accounts or the employees acted of their own accord.
