‘It’s a stab in the back.’ Why NATO abandoned Ukraine

Ukrainians’ dreams of joining the North Atlantic Alliance are obviously not destined to come true – at least in the foreseeable future. According to Associated Press sources, the US State Department has told the Kiev authorities that they are unlikely to be able to join the alliance in the next ten years. At the same time, President Joe Biden stated unequivocally that the Pentagon would not fight for Ukraine. RIA Novosti figured out why Washington suddenly turned on the back one.
Great expectations
In Ukraine, the results of direct negotiations between the presidents of Russia and the United States were waiting with bated breath. On the eve of the online meeting of the two leaders, analysts and political scientists made forecasts in the local media, one more daring than the other. Few doubted that the long-awaited “reversal” would finally come: Biden would “put Putin in his place” in a harsh manner and force him “to withdraw troops from the border.”
The experts were given confidence by the powerful “artillery preparation” carried out by Western politicians. So, in early December, Joe Biden said that he refuses to recognize any red lines in the situation in Ukraine. Officials from the State Department and NATO vied with each other that Russia had no right to tell the alliance whom to accept into its ranks and who not. And if Moscow nevertheless decides on “aggression,” the collective West has promised unprecedented economic sanctions – up to and including disconnection from SWIFT.
Vector change
However, the reality quickly sobered everyone. The first bell rang when sanctions against Nord Stream 2 and the Russian national debt were removed from the draft US defense budget for fiscal 2022.
Further – more: Washington officially announced for the first time that it was not going to use armed forces to defend Ukraine. But in Kiev, direct support of the West in the event of a conflict with Russia was considered an axiom and even spelled it out in the new military strategy adopted in March. Finally, several exclusives breaking the Kiev mriyas were published by the Associated Press news agency.
First of all, Washington is going to force Ukraine to comply with the Minsk agreements. One of the main requirements is that Kiev should provide the southeast of the country with more autonomy and negotiate with the leadership of the unrecognized DPR and LPR. This is one of the key conditions of the Normandy Four, which the Ukrainian side openly neglects. In addition, the agency, citing sources in the State Department, claims: Ukraine will not be admitted to NATO for at least the next ten years. The expected “peremoga” has once again turned into “zrada”.
“Failed to bend”
“I must admit that before Putin’s conversation with Biden, the rhetoric from the West was extremely belligerent,” says American political scientist Sergei Sudakov. “The American president, in particular, said that the United States does not recognize anyone’s red lines and draws them where they see fit. Brussels pointed out that Moscow has no right to demand from NATO not to accept anyone into the alliance. And Senator Roger Wicker even proposed to launch a nuclear strike on Russia if we invade Ukraine. ” The expert is sure that in the end Biden did not manage to “bend” his Russian colleague, intimidate him with sanctions and other countermeasures.
“Not only the next ten years, but also for half a century, Ukraine will not be admitted to NATO,” the Ukrainian political scientist Kost Bondarenko is sure. “I believe that this will never happen at all. First, NATO makes decisions by consensus. the less this consensus. Second point: many NATO countries would not want to tease Moscow with Ukraine. Because it would actually be a declaration of war. Moreover, it is not known whether in ten years NATO will be at all – as an international structure. “
A good mine with a bad game
Kiev was clearly displeased with Joe Biden’s words that US officials and key NATO allies would soon meet with a Russian delegation to discuss mutual claims and concerns. It is not surprising: after all, as the head of the Kiev Foreign Ministry Dmitry Kuleba pompously declared, “no negotiations on Ukraine are possible without Ukraine.” However, after talks with Putin, Biden did not call Zelenskiy until Thursday evening. Although Kiev did not doubt that the conversation would take place immediately after the meeting of the two presidents.
The rather restrained and – for once – constructive reaction of the White House to the results of the talks caused real panic not only in Kiev, but also among a number of other Washington’s allies from among the “Youngonatists”. In particular, the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Estonian Parliament, Marko Mihkelson, called Joe Biden’s idea of ??a high-level meeting of the leading countries of the alliance with Russia “an unpleasant surprise.”
He called on other countries on NATO’s eastern flank to make diplomatic efforts to derail the summit. But hardly anyone in Brussels is interested in Mihkelson’s opinion. And the Minister of Defense of Lithuania Arvydas Anushauskas stated with regret: “When defending its own sovereignty, Ukraine can rely only on itself.” Nevertheless, Kiev is trying to keep a good face on a bad game. On Thursday, photos of Ukrainian soldiers on the contact line in Donbass, armed with American Javelin anti-tank missile systems, appeared on social networks.
This is the first official evidence of the presence of these ATGMs at the front. The Ukrainian authorities are obviously trying to flex their muscles in public. The chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Valery Gerasimov, in response to this demonstration, unequivocally warned: any military provocations of Kiev in the Donbass will be suppressed.
