Jamiat-e-Islami to support Abdullah Abdullah in presidential elections

KABUL (Khaama Press): The Jamiat-e-Islami party led by Salahuddin Rabbani on Saturday announced support to Abdullah Abdullah during the upcoming presidential elections.

According to a statement released by Jamiat-e-Islami, a meeting of the leadership of Jamiat-e-Islami was held in the residence of the leader of the party this morning.

The statement further added that the meeting focused on selection of a candidate for the July 20th presidential elections and subsequently it was decided that the party would support Abdullah Abdullah in the elections.

Junbish-e-Millie party led by Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum and Wahdat-e-Islami party will also support the election ticket of Jamiat-e-Islami, the statement added.

The decision by the leadership council of Jamiat-e-Islami has been taken a day after the Chief Executive and one of the influential figures of the party Ata Mohammad Noor endorsed Mohammad Haneef Atmar’s ticket in the elections.

This comes registration is underway for the presidential runners for July 20th presidential elections.

The Independent Election Commission had earlier announced that the registration process would conclude on Sunday, the 20th of January.

So far ten candidates have registered their names for the presidential elections including Hakim Torsan, Latif Pedram, Faramuz Tamana, Enayatullah Hafiz, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, Zalmai Rasool, Noor Ul Haq Ulomi, Gulbudddin Hekmatyar, Ahmad Wali Massoud and Syed Noorullah Jalili.
