Kabul offices, roads to have low-energy lights

KABUL: The Ministry of Water and Energy (MoEW) has inked a contract with a Dutch company to replace high-consumption lights in Kabul offices and streets with energy-efficient bulbs.
The contract was signed between Energy and Water Minister Ali Ahmad Usmani and Samir Bayat, a representative of the company.
The project would take nine months to complete and lead to a 70 percent cut in electricity consumption, Usmani said, adding high-power lights would be replaced with a variety of low-power LEDs.
The low-consumption lights would save about 70 percent of energy, he said. The project, costing $4.8 million, will be implemented by a Dutch company.
Samir, representative of the firm, said work on the project would begin in three months and would be completed in six months.
He said more than 273,000 ordinary lights in offices and road would be replaced by the kind of low-energy lights specified in the contract.
