Kabul residents worried about ‘rise in crime’

KABUL: A number of Kabul residents who were interviewed by TOLOnews during this week said they are worried about a rise in crime in the city, blaming the security agencies for failure to ensure the safety of the estimated five million population in Afghanistan’s capital.

In a recent incident on Saturday, May 5, an Afghan lawmaker’s house in downtown Kabul came under attack by unknown gunmen.

Interior Ministry’s spokesman NusratRahimi said that Senator AfzalShamal was wounded and his wife lost her life in this incident.

Rahimi said the incident happened at midnight and the results of the police investigation will be shared with media later.

“We want no distinction when it comes to ensuring the safety of the ordinary residents and politicians,” said Mahmood, a Kabul resident.

“Police chiefs should strive hard to ensure the safety of the residents. People should be able to feel safe and secure. The situation is worse now and it is concerning,” said Arif, a Kabul resident.

An MP from Kapisa, Mirdad Khan Nijrabi, said he sees the problem in police headquarters management.

“The former police chiefs and officers who had a good awareness about Kabul situation and criminals were deployed out of Kabul, and those who have been deployed in Kabul are not much aware of the situation,” he said. “It is up to the police headquarters management that how much they make efforts and how much they receive cooperation from the people.”

Earlier in March, the Acting Interior Affairs Minister Gen. MassoudAndarabi warned senior police officers to “strictly” act against crimes in Kabul or resign from their posts.(TOLOnews)
