Kabul’s new security plan irks residents

Monitoring Desk

KABUL: The recent increase in security checkpoints and blockades on numerous roads under the new security plan of Kabul city has multiplied the problems of the people.

The residents of the Afghan capital, especially those living in the central parts of the city, complained that they are facing huge problems while traveling in the city and always reach several hours late to their workplaces.

Muhammad Aziz works at an office on 13th Road in the key Wazir Akbar Khan area of Kabul but always reach half hour late to his office due to increased security checkpoints and blockades of road.

“If the security plans means to close road for people then it is not a security plan. Peoples should be provided facilities in the security plan,” he told Afghan Islamic Press (AIP).

The distance between Masud Square and his office is hardly 300 meters but he has to wait at the police checkpoint for almost 30 minutes daily.

Besides the general public, the patients being brought to Wazir Akhbar Khan Hospital are also bearingthe brunt of the new security plan of Kabul, said Ismail, a doctor at Wazir Akhbar Khan Hospital.

He said the road from Sadarat Square to Zanbaq Square has been made one-way and the police have created new hurdles as result the ambulances and other vehicles have to wait for hours to pass this short distance.

The closer of several roads has resulted in increase in frequent traffic jams and rush.

When contacted, deputy spokesman of interior ministry Nasrat Rahimi told AIP that the current situation was the part of the old security plan and the new security plan would be executed in the next few days.

He said the checkpoints had been increased only in the limits of garrison and the vehicles are checked and monitored for the security of the people.
