Kim Jong Un Vows to Expand North Korea’s Nuclear Arsenal Amid Regional Tensions

Seoul (February 9, 2025): North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed to further develop the country’s nuclear capabilities in response to increased military cooperation between the United States, Japan, and South Korea, state media KCNA reported on Sunday.

During a visit to the Ministry of National Defence to mark the founding of the Korean People’s Army, Kim accused Washington and its allies of destabilizing the region through military drills and the deployment of nuclear strategic assets. He warned that North Korea would take “sustained countermeasures” to maintain a military balance.

While U.S. President Donald Trump recently signaled openness to diplomacy with Pyongyang during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Kim reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening North Korea’s nuclear forces.

In addition, Kim reiterated North Korea’s support for Russia in its war against Ukraine, vowing continued backing under the strategic partnership agreement between Pyongyang and Moscow. South Korea has alleged that North Korea has already sent around 11,000 soldiers to assist Russian forces.

KCNA also issued a separate warning against intensified U.S.-South Korea military exercises, stating that continued “aggressive actions” would have serious consequences.

As tensions rise, the Korean Peninsula remains on high alert, with fears that renewed military confrontations could escalate in the coming months.
