The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is committed to working with all relevant stakeholders for effective implementation of the laws. It was underscored by Dr. Sumaira Shams, Chairman of Women Caucus at KP Assembly. She was speaking to a consultation organized by Aawaz-II program in partnership with KP Commission on the Status of women (KPCSW) to elaborate the landmark Khyber Pakhtunkhwa domestic violence against women (Prevention and Protection) act 2021. Dr. Sumaira Shams noted that the law recognizes the physiological, economic, sexual and emotional pressure as form of violence, however immediate attention is suggested for framing the rules and procedures under the law. Dr. Yasmin, team leader Aawaz-II program said that Aawaz program provides a platform at Local, district and Provincial level to help familiarize the public about the law and facilitate its implementation to survivors of the violence. The Speakers urged for collective efforts of the government and civil society to help people benefit from the law.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government passed the law to prevent domestic violence against women and imposed punishments including up to five years imprisonment and one-year imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs. 300,000 if one did not comply with court’s orders. According to bill, a six-member District Protection Committee would be constituted which will provide medical treatment, legal assistance, and shelter to the victims.
In fact, most of our communities have added some unrealistic restrictions on women in the garb of religion or so-called traditions of their tribe, race, or ethnicity etc. These assumptions had made the lives of women miserable. Islam and constitution of Pakistan had conferred the basic rights of equality, education, employment, freedom of expression, and adult’s marriage according to their desire to all citizens of Pakistan without any discrimination of man and woman. Similarly, a woman has equal respect and value as being a daughter, sister, mother, and wife including right of inheritance as per Islamic and county’s law according to her relationship.
