LONDON: How does a London native born to Pakistani immigrants end up moving to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to create detailed portraits adorned in elaborate duptta scarves painted in tribute to her rich cultural history? Find out, in this conversation with painter Shabana Kauser.
“If you’d said to me 15 years ago, you’re going to move from central London, you’re going to leave your corporate job, move to Arkansas, and one day you’re going to start to talk about your culture through your artwork,” she explains, “I would have just sat there laughing for hours with tears coming down my eyes. It’s a really crazy, crazy journey.”
Two of Kauser’s portraits are now on display at 21c Museum Hotel in Bentonville in the current “Elevate” exhibit of locally curated art.
