Laghman family: The Taliban killed our only breadwinner

Monitoring Desk

LAGHMAN: In Laghman, family members of rickshaw driver Niaz Mohammad stated that Mohammad had been shot dead by the Taliban on the 3rd day of Ramadan (April 26) as he traveled to Ali Shang district with a local police officer.

The victim’s family said that Niaz Mohammad–”the martyred”–was their only breadwinner and has left eight children behind.

“A local police and two other civilians were with him… On the way, the two civilians left the vehicle as did the other person accompanying him. On the route he immediately came under fire,” said Saleh Mohammad, brother of Niaz Mohammad.

“Their father has gone and become martyred but officials have not looked into the reasons he was killed,” said Nasir Khan, an uncle of Niaz Mohammad.

The victim’s children hope that lasting peace comes to Afghanistan, and said they don’t want other children to become orphans.

“We want an end to the war–we want peace,” said Roshaan, the victim’s child.

“The security institutions should investigate the case seriously. Laghman’s situation is very bad and the government should prevent the killing and insecurity,” said Sayed Jawed, a relative of the victim.

This comes as in late February the US and Taliban signed a peace deal in Qatar, Doha to put an end to the longest US war and bring peace to Afghanistan.

Based on the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) figures, 533 civilians–including 150 children–have been killed in the first three months of 2020. (TOLOnews)
