Lifesaving drugs not available for CHK patients

KARACHI (PPI): Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) has suspended the local purchase (LP) of medicines since two weeks, causing a lot of problems to outdoor patients who were earlier availing this facility.

As per the policy and operational guidelines for local purchase of medicines, only indoor patients in an emergency can avail this facility, but local purchase of life-saving drugs has been suspended due to unknown reasons which compelled patients suffering from different chronic diseases to purchase medicines from their own pockets.

According to the Drug Policy, the purchase of most of the medicines has been centralised. A senior official of CHK told PPI that the local purchase of medicines had been partially suspended after the end of the fiscal year 2019-20 and the start of the new financial year 2020-21.

He said LP services to indoor patients were likely to resume soon after the issuance of tender.

However, he informed that patients admitted to the isolation wards established for COVID-19 patients and Intensive Care Units were availing this facility.

Acting Medical Superintendent, CHK, Dr Noor Muhammad, was not available for comment.
