Several thousand soldiers and officers, hundreds of units of military equipment, dozens of flights of military transport aviation – the CSTO deployed collective forces in Kazakhstan in the shortest possible time. All members of the organization helped the ally in difficult times: Russia, Belarus, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia. On the tasks of the peacekeepers – in the material of RIA Novosti.
Rapid deployment
The skies of Kazakhstan were almost continuously buzzing from dozens of heavy Il-76MD and An-124. For the first time in history, Russia’s military transport aviation deployed a multinational peacekeeping contingent of the CSTO countries on a combat mission.
The large-scale operation went off without a hitch – similar actions were repeatedly practiced in joint exercises. The arrived servicemen were distributed to the places of temporary deployment.
“At present, the units of the peacekeeping forces are performing tasks to protect important military, state and socially significant facilities in the city of Alma-Ata and the surrounding areas,” said the commander of the international forces, Colonel-General Andrey Serdyukov. “I express my gratitude to the Kazakh side for the prompt resolution of issues deployment and provision of military contingents with everything necessary. “
The CSTO leadership has repeatedly stressed that peacekeepers will not replace the forces of law and order, participate in the suppression of illegal actions and arrests of violators. The international contingent will secure key infrastructure and thereby allow local security forces to operate without fear of a strike from the rear. CSTO units have already taken up positions and began to serve.
The headquarters of the CSTO peacekeeping contingent was deployed on the basis of the Military Institute of the Ground Forces of Kazakhstan in Alma-Ata. Soldiers of the 98th Guards Airborne Division (Ivanovo) are in the capital of the country, Nur-Sultan, guarding the city airport, the General Staff and the 22-storey Kazmedia television center. An elite formation of the Russian Airborne Forces, the 45th separate special forces brigade (Kubinka), entrenched in the southeast and cordoned off the air harbor of Alma-Ata, the headquarters of the Unified Air Defense System of Russia and Kazakhstan and the 602nd airbase in Shymkent.
Units of the 31st Separate Guards Airborne Assault Brigade from Ulyanovsk were transferred to the east to protect Ust-Kamenogorsk and facilities of NAC Kazatomprom JSC. This national nuclear company is the world’s largest producer of natural uranium. In addition, the paratroopers control the Russian Consulate General in Almaty, the presidential palace in Nur-Sultan and other administrative buildings.
A company of Vitebsk contract soldiers of the 103rd airborne brigade of special operations forces arrived from Belarus. Their area of responsibility is the artillery arsenal in the village of Kopchegai and the military airfield Zhetygen near Almaty. Belarusians ensure the safety of the landing and deployment of other peacekeepers.
The military from Armenia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan were sent to key fuel and energy facilities, major transport interchanges and railway stations. These are, albeit small, but elite units. So, 150 soldiers of the 25th Kyrgyz brigade of the “Scorpion” special purpose are taking part in the operation.
“Like a flock of hyenas”
In addition, the CSTO servicemen took under protection the building of the Central Bank and the National Security Committee in Nur-Sultan, the plant for the production of vaccines against coronavirus in Otar, the central market of Almaty and the port of Aktau (Shevchenko)
The effect of the peacekeepers surpassed all expectations – the Kazakh security forces, feeling the support of their allies, began to methodically cleanse settlements from looters and bandits.
“It is extremely important that our organization, with the participation of its secretariat, was able to quickly and smoothly make all the necessary decisions within a tight time frame, one might say, in a matter of hours, in order to prevent undermining the foundations of the functioning of state power in Kazakhstan, complete degradation of the internal situation, and to put a barrier to terrorists., criminals, looters and other criminals, – said Russian President Vladimir Putin at the CSTO video summit. – I am sure that the leadership of Kazakhstan will do everything to establish the normal work of law enforcement agencies, the country’s economy. I do not doubt this for a second.
On Monday, the Kazakh authorities announced the arrest of nearly 8,000 people suspected of participating in the riots. The General Prosecutor’s Office has launched pre-trial investigations. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, speaking at a videoconference, stressed that Kazakhstani cities were attacked by extremists. According to him, militants attacked morgues at night in order to steal the bodies of dead accomplices – this is a long-standing practice of international terrorist organizations. Judging by the released videos of the arrests, extremist literature and firearms were confiscated from the violators.
“The organizers of the attack on Kazakhstan tripled several waves of aggression,” Tokayev specified. “At the first stage, peaceful protests took place, then, in particular in Alma-Ata, political rallies were held, and then from three directions, like a huge flock of hyenas, rushed to the city armed militants The beginning of what will probably go down in history as the “Alma-Ata tragedy”.
The summit participants agreed that “Maidan” technologies were used in Kazakhstan, and the militants were trained in training camps abroad. The parties agreed that it is necessary to counteract attempts at destructive external interference in the CSTO’s area of responsibility and promptly respond to any threats.
And on Tuesday, President Tokayev said that the peacekeepers had completed their main tasks and would soon return to their permanent deployment points.
