London Freelance Journalists Rally in Support of Adil Raja Amid SLAPP Trial

LONDON:— The London Freelance Branch of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has officially declared its solidarity with freelance investigative journalist Adil Raja, who faces a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP) brought by Pakistan’s intelligence agency.

Raja, an NUJ member known for his hard-hitting commentary on military and intelligence affairs in Pakistan, is scheduled to stand trial for defamation at the Royal Courts of Justice in London from July 21 to 24, 2025. The case has sparked widespread concern among press freedom advocates who view it as an attempt to stifle critical journalism through costly and intimidating legal tactics.

In a formal resolution, the London Freelance Branch condemned SLAPP lawsuits as a direct threat to journalistic integrity and freedom of expression. The branch emphasized that journalists must be able to conduct investigative reporting without fear of legal harassment or financial ruin.

“This case is emblematic of the growing trend where powerful entities use the courts to suppress legitimate journalistic scrutiny,” the branch noted in its statement. “The NUJ stands firmly behind Adil Raja and reaffirms its commitment to defending members against such abuses of the legal system.”

As part of its support efforts, the branch pledged to circulate Raja’s press release among members, promote coverage of the trial, and coordinate a public solidarity campaign both online and offline. Raja may also be invited to speak at a future meeting to discuss his case in person.

The branch further called on the NUJ’s National Executive Council to monitor the trial closely and to advocate for stronger legal protections against SLAPPs within the UK.

The case has become a test of the UK’s commitment to press freedom amid increasing international pressure to curb the misuse of defamation laws.
