LAHORE: Commenting on the increase in petroleum products’ prices, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday said that victimizing the opposition, and not people’s welfare, was Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sole concern.
She said when an ‘incompetent’ person would be made the country’s prime minister, then such an increase in prices was inevitable. “Only those people are answerable to the people who are elected, and not ‘selected’,” she taunted.
Talking to the media at Jati Umra before leaving for Islamabad, where she is scheduled to chair party meeting besides attending Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) meeting on February 4, she said if PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari put forward the proposal of in-house change through a no-confidence move in the parliament at the PDM’s meeting, her party would consider it.
The PML-N vice-president, however, at the same time, clarified that her and other parties believed in giving resignations from assemblies. She clarified that her criticism of the institutions was not for the sake of criticism.
Maryam said whenever a breach of the constitution would be committed, she would raise her voice against it.
“And this is what I am doing these days,” she said and added, “The PDM, in its meeting on February 4 would chalk out a strategy with respect to ousting the present government.”
She said prices of essential items were constantly on the rise and people were screaming because of that.
She said that the PDM would devise a future course of action with respect to resignations at its huddle on February 4.
Maryam further said there was a consensus between all parties in the opposition’s alliance on the long march. “But when to begin it and what will be the duration of the sit-in, will be decided later,” she explained.
She said she did not believe the government would be able to complete its five-year term given such high inflation.
