Maternity ward being built in Kabul children hospital

KABUL (Pajhwok): The foundation stone of a building for a maternity section at the Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital was laid on Monday in Kabul, an official said.

Public Health Minister Firozuddin Firoz, who attended the ceremony, said the maternity ward would help cure some complex children’s diseases in order families avoid sending their ailing kids abroad for treatment.

The minister the 100-bed maternity section would be turned into a research and treatment center of mothers and infants with complex diseases.

A children’s heart surgery center would be also opened in Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital in near future, Firoz said.

Ihsanullah Bayat, head of the Bayat Foundation, on the occasion said that the ward would be built on a 700-square meter area in four storeys.

He said the ward would offer services including surgery, maternity, children’s cancer, eyes, ear and throat (ENT), blood bank, radiography and treatment of C-section deliveries.

The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has allocated land for the ward which would be handed over to the ministry once completed, he said.

Mohammad Khan, first deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO), who was also present, appreciated Bayat Foundation for its contributions and services to ailing humanity and said the new project would be a great step for resolving mother’s health problems.

He hoped other investors would also come forward and invest in different areas and take part in helping the impoverished masses.

Noorul Haq Yousufi, head of Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital, said the hospital had been treating children for the past 48 years in Afghanistan. He was happy about the building for the maternity ward.
