More than 2,000 Afghan refugees return home from Iran

KABUL (Khaama Press): The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation of the de facto administration said that over 2,000 Afghan refugees returned home from Iran. The ministry said on Monday that 2,482 Afghan refugees returned home via the Islam Qala border in Herat province, Afghanistan. According to the official in Islam Qala in Herat province, out of the 2,482 Afghan refugees, 872 have been referred to the IMO office for essential aid. The ministry has yet to indicate whether the return of refugees is voluntary or if they were compelled to come to the country. Moreover, the ministry announced on Sunday that 37 Afghan refugees had been repatriated to the country. These refugees have spent varying periods, ranging from one to six months, in confinement within Pakistani prisons. Many Afghan immigrants in Pakistan and Iran were previously subjected to arrests and physical abuse by officials in these countries. This mistreatment was primarily attributed to their inability to provide valid legal residence documents. However, despite the dire humanitarian crisis and rising poverty in Afghanistan, increased migration from the country has been accompanied by unemployment and housing issues in neighbouring Pakistan and Iran. These challenges have prompted some immigrants to return to Afghanistan voluntarily.
