Muharram moon sighted, Ashura on Oct 1

ISLAMABAD: The month of Muharram will begin from September 22 in Pakistan as Ruet-e-Hilal Committee announced that they sighted the moon on Thursday evening.

In media talk after moon sighting ceremony, Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Mufti Munibur Rehman said that the committee members also witnessed the moon. New Islamic calendar – AH 1439 – will officially commence from Friday.

The days of Ashura (9th and 10th Muharram) will be from October 1 to October 2.

Sessions were held by regional committees in Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar, while the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee met on rooftop of Islamabad s Met Office.

It was told that the committees sighted moon on numerous locations. Meteorological department had earlier forecasted that the moon will be sighted on Thursday due to clear sky.
