KARACHI (PPI): Sindh government has imposed a 60-day ban on 161 religious scholars and clerics under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) to maintain peace during the month of Muharram.

“The inter-city movement of 161 religious scholars and clerics has been banned, while restrictions will also be imposed on their speech at any forum for the next 60 days,” read a notification issued by provincial home department.

“The ban has been imposed to prevent such scholars from delivering inflammatory speech and to maintain the law and order situation during the month,” it added.

The clerics who have been slapped the ban hail from various parts of the country and are affiliated with different religious organisations.

According to the notification, the majority of the scholars and clerics belong to Sukkar, Khairpur, Ghotki, Jacobabad, Larkana and Shikarpur.

On Thursday, Islamabad Capital Territory Administration (ICTA) barred 11 firebrand clerics from making speech during Muharram, while banning 14 others from entering the capital for two months.
