Murtaza Wahab visits leather industries cluster

F.P. Report

KARACHI: If the combined effluent treatment plant of the leather industry in Korangi Industrial Area is converted to solar energy, it will not only save electricity but also significantly reduce the cost per gallon of wastewater treatment of leather industry; reducing the overall cost of leather products will also increase their competitiveness in global markets. As a result, increased sales will increase domestic revenue in the form of foreign exchange.

These views were expressed by Barrister Murtaza Wahab, Spokesperson to the Government of Sindh and Advisor to the Chief Minister Sindh on Law, Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development on the occasion of tree plantation with representatives of Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) at the Green Belt in Korangi Industrial Area Sector 7A.

He said that the capacity of the said treatment plant also needs to be enhanced so that the fixed cost would remain the same for treating more wastewater so that the cost per unit would also decline. It would significantly reduce the environmental cost to the industries for treating their wastewater which eventually will benefit the consumers.

Murtaza Wahab directed the representatives of the association that if any member industry instead of discharging its wastewater through the combined plant releases directly into the drain, they should immediately complain about it with the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency so that the violator can be prosecuted according to the law.

On this occasion, Murtaza Wahab along with PTA chief Gulzar Feroze also planted trees on the green belt and assured him of all possible help from the Sindh Government in solving the environmental problems of the leather industry.

Chairman Planning and Development Department, Government of Sindh Muhammad Waseem and DC Korangi were also present on the occasion.
