KABUL: US and NATO forces top commander in Afghanistan Gen. John Nicholson has said the western military alliance respects electoral choices of the Afghan voters and politicians.
Gen. Nicholson wrote on his social media account that NATO respected Afghan politicians and electoral choices of the Afghans.
“We respect Afghan political processes, evolution, Afghan politicians, and electoral choices of the people of Afghanistan,” he wrote.
The remarks from the US general come a day after the Afghan government officially launched the voter’s registration process ahead of the Oct 20 parliamentary and district council elections.
Earlier last month in am exclusive interview with Pajhwok Gen Nicholson had assured full security cooperation with the Afghan forces during the elections.
Meanwhile, NATO Senior Civilian Representative (SCR) office in Afghanistan welcomed efforts at holding credible and inclusive elections which the Senior Civilian Representative termed as key to the Afghan democracy and security.
President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah officially launched the voter registration process and signed up to vote in the upcoming parliamentary and district council elections.
President Ghani said the election commission must make it sure that the elections were transparent.
Abdullah said the launch of the voter registration was one of the National Unity Government’s commitments regarding electoral reforms.
Earlier this week the IEC said the voter registration process would be completed in three phases.
