New ideas, patents are currency in knowledge-based economy

SWABI: Speakers in one-day seminar on ‘Intellectual Property Rights’ said on Wednesday that the new ideas, patents and innovations are the new currencies of the knowledge-based economy, which should be protected and strengthened through research work to make true dream of progress and prosperity.

The one-day Seminar was orgainsed by the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC), Women University Swabi with collaboration of Intellectual Property Organization (IPO) of Pakistan. The seminar was attended by faculty members and students, especially those conduct the research. Saifullah Khan, deputy director, IPO Pakistan and Zahoor Ahmad, assistant director were the resource persons at the seminar.

They gave detail presentations about intellectual property rights (IPRs), trademarks, copyrights, patents and industrial designs.

They said that we should recognize the importance of innovation and intellectual property rights of the researchers which could prove very helpful in paving the way for inclusion the country to join the race of the world’s leading entrepreneurial leaders.

They said that they knew about the IPRs importance in improving the country economic position, and boosting the scientific and technological capability to safeguard national interest and ensure the economic prosperity.

Speaking on occasion, Prof Dr Khanzadi Fatima Khattak, Vice-Chancellor of the University said that creativity provides new better means and ideas for turning novel ideas into reality while delivering according to the country requirements and needs, meeting the expectations and chalked out strategy of the institutions.

“The universities are supposed to create new knowledge besides disseminating already acquired knowledge and technologies to their students. Justajoo (search, exploration) is the integral part of our faith,” she said.

Mr Saifullah said that the Women University Swabi is in its infancy, but has firmly committed to improve the standard and conduct result-oriented research activities according to requirements of the country’s industry. Through indigenous activities, creativity and innovations, we could achieve our objectives in various fields, he said. Faculty members said that adequate awareness about Intellectual Property Rights can enable University’s faculty and researchers to utilize the newly generated knowledge/ideas in more meaningful and beneficial ways.

At the end, Vice-Chancellor gave away shields and certificates to outstanding contributors, faculty members and research students.
