Nimroz residents call to reopen girls’ schools in coming year

KABUL (TOLO News): As the new academic year approaches, residents of Nimroz province asked the Islamic Emirate to reopen girls’ school above sixth grade in the new year.

They said women make up half of the society and they urged the current government to obey the wishes of the citizens of the country.

A student, Razia, told TOLOnews that she eagerly awaits the news of the reopening of schools each morning.

Razia said that she hopes to study in medical school after graduating and through this way serve the citizens.

“I wake up every morning hoping that we hear good news about the opening of schools. This is what we are really waiting for,” Razia told TOLOnews.

“We ask the Islamic Emirate to pay attention to the education of our children soon,” said Omid, a resident of Nimroz.

Meanwhile, some students at a private school in the province asked officials of the current government to reopen schools for all girls in the country.

“We ask the Islamic Emirate to reopen girls’ schools and universities,” said Qudratullah, a student.

“I ask the government to open the educational institutions for our sisters. We need the education of our sisters,” said Jan Mohammad Alekozi, head of Bawar School in Nimruz.

Nimruz local officials said that they are waiting for the order of the Ministry of Education to reopen girls’ schools above the sixth grade.

“Following the direction of the high ranking official of the ministry, we are ready for it,” said Gul Ahmad Haqqani, head of education in Nimroz.

It has been nearly two years since girls’ schools above the sixth grade were closed, and it has been about three months that they have been banned from going to universities, yet it is still unknown when these institutions will reopen.
