No retired army officer nominated for slot of NAB chief

ISLAMABAD: None of the parliamentary parties has recommended a single retired military officer for the post of next chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) though thus category figures among three types of former senior officials who are qualified as per the law.

As per the section eight of the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) 1999  that three types of retired officers can be selected as NAB chairman unless he is retired CJ of Supreme court or judge of SC or the chief justice of high court, retired officer of the armed forces or as a retired federal government officer in grade 22 or equivalent

The retired military officers can be selected as per the law from the three forces including army, PAF and Navy if both the government and opposition agreed on it and the retired judges dominate the list of the favorites which was proposed by the parliamentary parties with seven former justices of apex court and the remaining five names are the former bureaucrats.

As per the media reports, the PML-N government has recommended  the names of Justice (retd) Rehmat Jafri, Justice (retd) Ijaz Chaudhry and Intelligence Bureau Director General Aftab Sultan, while Khursheed Shah has proposed the names of Justice (retd) Faqeer Muhammad Khokhar, Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal and the Election Commission of Pakistan’s former secretary Ishtiaque Ahmad.

The names proposed by PTI included former Intelligence Bureau chief Dr Shoaib Suddle, Justice (retd) Falak Sher, and former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) chief secretary Muhammad Shahzad Arbab Shahzad while MQM suggested the names of Justice (retd) Mehmood Rizvi, Justice (retd) Ghaus Muhhamad and ECP ex-secretary Kanwar Dilshad.
