Over 4,000 prisoners released in past year: Abdul Jabar Takhari

KABUL (TOLOnews): The General Consul of Afghanistan in Karachi, Abdul Jabar Takhari, said that more than 4,000 Afghan prisoners have been released from Pakistani prisons in the past year.

Takhari said that efforts are underway to free more than 200 people who are in Pakistani prisons.

According to Takhari, the deportation of Afghan immigrants from Pakistan has also decreased. “There are 200 prisoners in Sindh, and efforts are being made to release them so they can return to the country,” said Abdul Jabar Takhari.

Meanwhile, some Afghan immigrants in Pakistan reported a decrease in harassment by the Pakistani military and asked that the Pakistani government continue its oversight.

“In the past two months the harassment and detention of Afghan immigrants has stopped, only for those Afghans that did not have POR (Proof of Registration) cards or ACC (Afghan Citizenship Cards) and had entered Pakistan illegally,” said Haji Nazar, an Afghan immigrant in Pakistan.

“The demand of the Afghan immigrants in Pakistan, particularly those who have arrived within the last two years, is that the government of Pakistan allow them to proceed with their cases properly and depart from Pakistan,” said an Afghan journalist in Pakistan.

More than 600,000 Afghan immigrants have returned to Afghanistan since the process of expelling Afghan refugees from Pakistan started.
