Over 77,389 security men to guard 17.826mn voters

PESHAWAR: More than 77,389 security personnel have been deployed at 11,132 polling stations in Khyber Pakthunkhwa to provide safe and peaceful atmosphere to more than 17.827 million registered voters to exercise their right of franchise in free and transparent manner on Wednesday.

The security personnel were deployed in all most sensitive, sensitive and normal polling stations across the province including seven tribal districts of Orakzai, Khyber, North Waziristan, South Waziristan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Kurram and adjoining Frontier Regions recently merged in KP.

The ECP has setup around 11,132 polling stations in province in which 2,572 were declared most sensitive 4,427 sensitive and 4136 normal in Khyber Pakthunkhwa.

Official sources told APP that 25,720 security personnel were deployed to protect 2,572 most sensitive polling stations, adding 10 security personnel would guard each sensitive polling station in the province.

Similarly, 30,989 personnel would guard around 4,427 sensitive polling stations, and that seven personnel would be deployed at each sensitive polling station across the province.

Whereas 20,680 personnel have assigned the task to protect 4136 normal polling stations including deployment of five personnel at each normal polling station in the province. The security personnel of federal government, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan police, Frontier Constabulary and Levies, and provincial government’s other departments are assisting KP police during election.

As part of security arrangements, 10,351 closed-circuit television cameras were installed at 2,572 most sensitive polling stations and 7,779 polling booths in the province.

The ECP has authorized District Retuning Officers and Retuning Officers to exercise powers of first class magistrate from July 12, 2018 and until the consolidation and announcement of official results.

Any person found guilty of violation of ECP code of conduct, take law in hands or disrupt voting process on polling day would be punished on the spot according to law besides imposition of heavy fine and imprisonment sentences or both to the accused.

The supporters and agents of candidates would not be allowed to setup private polling booths in premise of polling stations and bringing of arms and ammunition inside polling stations were strictly prohibited.
