Pakistan registers 3,567 coronavirus cases in a day

ISLAMABAD: The daily tally of coronavirus cases in Pakistan continued to build up along with the positivity ratio amid the rapid spread of the latest wave of Covid-19 fuelled by the Omicron variant.

Pakistan registered 3,567 infections as compared to 3,019 cases a day earlier, along with seven deaths during the last 24 hours (Thursday), showed the statistics released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Friday morning.

The latest data released by the NCOC suggested that after the addition of seven new deaths, the overall toll has now surged to 28,999 whereas the number of total infections now stood at 1,315,834 after adding the fresh 3,567 cases.

During the last 24 hours (Thursday), 48,449 tests were conducted throughout Pakistan whereas the positivity ratio shot up to 7.36 percent. The number of patients in critical care was 675.

During the last 24 hours (Thursday), as many as 362 patients have recovered from the virus whereas the total recoveries stood at 1,260,407. As of Friday, the total count of active cases in the country was recorded at 26,428.

As many as 494,964 coronavirus cases have so far been confirmed in Sindh, 450,686 in Punjab, 181,996 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 110,243 in Islamabad, 33,682 in Balochistan, 34,726 in Azad Kashmir and 10,437 in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Moreover, 13,085 individuals have lost their lives to the pandemic in Punjab so far, 7,693 in Sindh, 5,952 in KP, 967 in Islamabad, 749 in Azad Kashmir, 367 in Balochistan and 186 in Gilgit Baltistan.

The coronavirus has killed at least 5,511,146 people since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to an AFP tally compiled from official sources on Thursday.

The United States has recorded the most Covid deaths with 843,624, followed by Brazil with 620,371, India on 485,035 and Russia 319,172.

Taking into account excess mortality linked to Covid-19, the WHO estimates the overall death toll could be two to three times higher.
