Islamabad: Students at the Islamabad Science Festival 2021 witnessed a remarkable moment as one of their fellows broke the world record after arranging all elements of the periodic chart in the fastest possible time.

Rohan Khatwani, a ninth-grader who hails from Thar district of Sindh, made his family and hometown proud as he arranged the periodic table in just 1 minute and 58 seconds.

Rohan broke the previous record of Lahore-based Pakistani student Natalia Najam who won the title last year by finishing the task in 2 minutes and 42 seconds. Rohan’s achievement was witnessed by Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Hamza Shafqaat and President ECO Scinece Foundation (ECOSF) Manzoor Soomro.

COVID-themed science fest

The impact of COVID-19 was the dominant theme at the Islamabad Science Festival organized by Campaignistan jointly with Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration. The festival mostly engaged students of government schools who would not typically have the chance to take part in science and technology events.

The projects at the festival ranged from precautionary measures, hand washing stations, detection of the virus, benefits of facemasks and sanitizers as well as the working of coronavirus isolation wards at the hospital. In their projects, the students explored the impact of COVID-19 across various categories such as socio-economic, health, technology and ecological sciences.

Young enthusiastic students wowed the audience with their incredible science demonstrations and passion for science. DC Islamabad Hamza Shafqaat was impressed with the knowledge and enthusiasm of the students. The festival “provided a great opportunity for the students to showcase their talent in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and the Islamabad administration will continue to organize science festival every year in Islamabad” Hamza Shafqaat said.

Prosperous future

The top three exhibits by the students of Islamabad Model College for Girls (IMCG) F-10/2, IMCG I-8/1 and Islamabad Model College for Boys (IMCB) Rawal Dam were presented awards by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Education Minister Shahram Khan Taraqai and Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) ICT, Rana Waqas. After meeting the talented students at the science fest, Minister Shahram said that he was “hopeful and optimistic about the prosperous future of Pakistan” and especially the potential of girl students in STEM education.

This was the second science festival held in Islamabad after 2019. Both events proved to be successes in providing a platform for students and teachers to display their talents and in promoting the love for science and technology, the organizers said.
