Peace Jirga not discussed in meeting with US Envoy

KABUL (TOLO news): Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said the peace Jirga was not discussed in Afghan leaders’ meeting with US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad.

The High Peace Council says that the structure of the peace Jirga’s organizing committee has been finalized.

Almost 2,500 delegates from all over the country will be invited to attend the Jirga, the grand assembly, which officials say will help Afghans to determine the path toward peace.

Abdullah said it is expected that the Jirga will be discussed in future meetings between government leaders and the political leaders of the country.

Khalilzad who arrived in Kabul on Sunday held talks with Afghan leaders, politicians, civil society members, tribal elders, women and youth to discuss the Afghan peace.

“There was no significant discussion about the Loya Jirga in the Wednesday’s meeting, there is possibility that this issue will be discussed in future meetings,” said Abdullah.

Abdullah also talked about the Qatar talks results where US and Taliban agreed on foreign forces withdrawal from Afghanistan and counter terrorism assurances.

“The other demand raised by the Taliban was the withdrawal of foreign forces. However, a clear agreement has not reached about it,” said Abdullah.

Afghan politicians are set to meeting the Taliban in Qatar in less than two weeks.

“A council should be formed that is acceptable to everyone and there should only few people in it,” said Ghairat Baheer, member of Hizb-e-Islami leadership council who also attended Wednesday’s meeting.
