Pelosi discuss peace issues with Ghani

KABUL: A delegation of US congress led by Nancy Pelosi called on President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani here on Thursday and discussed with him some core issues including peace and security.

A press release issued by Presidential Palace said Chief Executive of national unity government Dr. Abdullah Abdullah was also present on the occasion.

Speaking at the occasion, President Ghani said that US new strategy for Afghanistan and South Asia had brought positive changes to the situation and they were close to achieving their goals.

He assured the visiting delegation that the national unity government was committed to holding parliamentary and presidential elections transparently.

Chief Executive Dr. Abdullah Abdullah thanked US for their assistance to different sectors in Afghanistan and termed it fruitful in suppressing the common enemy and achieving common goals.

Nancy Pelosi lauded three years achievements of Afghan government and hoped that the implementation of new plans in the future would further strengthen peace and stability in Afghanistan.

She said US was committed to continued cooperation with Afghanistan and fighting terrorism and always stand by Afghanistan as a strategic ally. The statement said peace process, women role in different sectors, economic development, investment, private sector’s role, import, exports, transit, regional cooperation, elections, fighting narcotics and other issues also came under discussion during the meeting.
