Pence, Ghani discuss recent wave of terror in Afghanistan

KABUL (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani and US Vice-President Mike Pence held a telephonic conversation on recent terrorist attacks in Kabul, the Presidential Palace said on Saturday.

A statement from Ghani’s office said Pence extended his condolences to the president and the Afghans on the loss of lives in the latest spate of attacks on behalf of the US government and people.

“In this difficult situation, we stand shoulder to shoulder with the government of Afghanistan,” Pence was quoted as saying. He also commended Ghani’s leadership and strong determination.

The statement added Ghani thanked the US VP for his sentiments and continued American assistance to Afghanistan in various fields.

Ghani likened the second consecutive terror attack in Kabul to the September 11 assault in the US. But such assaults further strengthened Kabul’s resolve to defeat terrorist groups, he said.

The president added: “Now is the time the Afghan and Muslim Taliban denounce the attacks and those who don’t do this are terrorists. The Afghan government would never negotiate with them.”
