PM Imran Khan deserves Nobel Peace Prize: Former Indian SC judge

ISLAMABAD (Monitoring Desk): A former judge of India’s Supreme Court said on Tuesday that Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan deserves Nobel Peace Prize for his statesman-like approach in the face of heightened tensions between Pakistan and India.

“Pakistan and India are poor countries, who cannot afford a war,” Justice (retd) Markandey Katju said, while speaking to anchorperson, Hamid Mir, on Geo News show ‘Capital Talk’.

He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was creating an atmosphere of war due to elections in his country.

Tensions between India and Pakistan reached an all-time high following Indian incursions into Pakistani airspace and subsequent downing of two Indian warplanes and capture of an Indian Air Force pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman.

PM Khan, in his address to a joint session of Parliament last week, announced to release Wing Commander Abhinandan as a “gesture of peace” towards India, earning him praise from celebrities, journalists, diplomats and the common public, who admired his brave and bold move in the favour of maintaining peace in the region and possibly avoiding an all-out war with India, the consequences of which could be disastrous.

“I was greatly impressed by Prime Minister Imran Khan’s speech,” the former Indian judge said further on the show. “Imran said what an intellectual would say.”

Justice (retd) Katju said he found the quality of a scholar in the Pakistan premier and salutes Khan for it. He said Khan behaved very wisely and deserves Nobel Peace prize.

NobelPeacePrizeForImranKhan began trending on Twitter soon after his announcement to release captured India.
