PM Imran says Judiciary’s independence didn’t produce desired results

F.P. Report

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Tuesday said that the judiciary’s independence has not produced desired results in the country,.

The prime minister said that the ‘dilemma’ with Pakistan was that there was a class system here.

Addressing the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the district courts in Islamabad, the prime minister said sadly there existed two types of Pakistan; one for the rich and the other for the poor. “The wealthy and influential always want to remain above the law,” he regretted.

He was of the view that the country had gone downhill in terms of the absence of rule of law after 1985 when a semi-democratic government had taken over after the general elections held on a non-party basis.

The prime minister further said that the greatest harm former military dictator General (r) Pervez Musharraf had done to Pakistan was that he had given ‘amnesty’ (NRO) to the politicians tainted with corruption. “That money did not belong to the military dictator but to the nation,” he said, and added, “Still these politicians demand NRO from the government.”

“So how could there be progress in the country when high and mighty demand preferential treatment?” he questioned.

PM Imran said he had joined politics because he wanted to serve the country. “There can be no prosperity in the country unless there is of rule of in law,” he said.

Emphasising that a country can develop if courts in that country are independent, the prime minister regretted that the struggle launched for the independence of the judiciary when Musharraf was in power did not bear fruits.
