PM: Strong bilateral ties with Russia is top most priority

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan committed towards completing legal process for the Pakistan Stream (North-South) Gas Pipeline project and commence the work as early as possible, Prime Minister Imran Khan said Wednesday.

Recalling interaction with President Vladimir Putin during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Bishkek in June 2019, where he had underscored his desire to take the bilateral relationship to a new level, Prime Minister stated that

Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with Russia as a key foreign policy priority.

During the talks, prime minister expressed satisfaction at the steady growth in bilateral ties, including deepening cooperation in trade, energy, security and defence.

Regarding the agendas of the meeting, the dignitaries discussed enhanced bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, industrial modernization, railways and aviation, adding that it was agreed that the Inter-Governmental Commission (IGC), due to meet in Moscow later this year, would strongly follow specific proposals and projects in that context.

Furthermore, they also exchanged views on the health and economic challenges that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Congratulating Russia on its development of Sputnik-V vaccine, Prime Minister Imran Khan underscored Pakistan’s procurement plans in that regard.

Pakistan-Russia bilateral relations and issues of regional and global importance were discussed in the meeting.

 Other than this, the changing geo-political situation of Afghanistan was also discussed, upon  which Prime minister stressed on the importance of a negotiated political settlement of the conflict in Afghanistan.

Importantly, Pakistan also praised Russia’s for its efforts in promoting the Afghan peace process including through the hosting of the recent meeting of Extended Troika in Moscow.

Highlighting the current situation of IIOJK, the  the prime minister shed light on Pakistan’s perspective on issues of peace and security in South Asia, including the need for peaceful resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute.

During the meeting the dignatories also expressed views on the ongoing situation in West Asia, the Gulf, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region and prime minister reiterated his invitation to President Putin to visit Pakistan at his earliest convenience.
