PMDC restoration

Complying with the decision of Islamabad High Court on the petition filed by the Registrar of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), federal government has agreed to restore the constitutional body, which is mandated with powers of granting registration to the newly opened government and private medical colleges, registration and renewal of degrees of doctors.

PMDC had been dissolved by promulgating a Presidential Ordinance on October 19 last year to pave the way for constituting Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC). The commission comprised members from medical fraternity and few non-professionals.

There were complaints against the PMDC regarding the grant of registration to private medical colleges which did not fulfill the necessary criteria. On the contrary, medical graduates holding degrees of colleges of foreign countries, including China, Russia and west European countries were being victimized by failing them several times in degrees registration examinations. However, these inefficiencies could have been removed by carrying out reforms in PMDC through act of parliament instead of winding it up by rushing a Presidential Ordinance.
