Police detain 400 crime suspects in a month

KABUL: More than 400 people have been arrested in connection with different crimes in capital Kabul during the past one month and the crackdown is being extended to nearby Paghman and Khak-i-Jabbar districts, an official said.

Kabul Police Chief Brig. Gen. Syed Mohammad Roshandel told Pajhwok Afghan News that eighty percent of check-points police were conducting mobile patrols over the past few months and it had proved effective in reducing crimes.

He said for the New Year, police planned to convert more check-points into mobile patrol so they were able to prevent crimes in many areas, urging people to cooperate with police in controlling crimes.

Referring to crime incidents in Kabul, he said: “Motorcyclists are allowed to carry only their family members on their motorcycles in the city and there is a complete ban pillion ride.”

“There have been some challenges in preventing crimes, but we have achievements as well.”

He said security had improved in Kabul province districts after police captured over 100 weapons during a search operation in Qarabagh district.

He said police also planned to conduct fresh search operations jointly with other security agencies in the Khak-i-Jabbar and Paghman districts.

He added security situation was satisfactory inside the city but there were some challenges in the fifth and eighth police districts.

Referring to police role in combating drug trafficking, he said: “Counter-narcotics is a difficult task throughout the country, but we have intensified out efforts to deal with the menace and police have arrested 221 drug vendors, including six women, during 105 operations in the past one month alone.”

“Nine kilograms of heroin, 13 kilograms of Shesha (ice), three kilograms of opium, 23 kilograms hashish, six vehicles and some alcoholic drinks have been seized during the period,” he said.

Roshandel said six policemen had been detained on bribery charges and having a hand in the sale, trafficking and purchase of drugs and referred to prosecutors.

He added currently the process of collecting illegal arms, vehicles without registration plates and removal of tinted glasses was in progress. (Pajhwok)
