President stresses need for public awareness

KABUL: Stressing the need for a public awareness campaign regarding polio, President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani has said the crippling disease is still posing threat to the children in the country.

The president said this while speaking to governors and directors of public health and Haj and Auqaf departments of Kandahar, Helmand, Nangarhar, Kunar, Paktika and Farah province of Afghanistan in a video conference Thursday.

He said the progress so far made on eradication of the polio disease in the country was not enough and more steps and efforts needed to completely eliminate the polio virus from the country.

Referring to recent registration of polio cases, the president said the polio virus has not yet been fully eradicated from the Loya Wayala of Kandahar and some parts of eastern Nangarhar province.

He directed Kandahar municipality department to make efforts for implementation of anti-polio campaign with the cooperation of prayer leaders of mosque and Imam of Kharqa Sharif.

He also directed that vaccination teams should also increase their efforts to administer polio vaccines to the children at Torkham and Spin Boldak crossing points.

The president also stressed the need of turning the polio eradication efforts into a national campaign.

He said visa facilities would be provided to international organizations working on the eradication of polio disease from Afghanistan.
