Addressing the newly elected government of Gilgit Baltistan, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that government is working to give provincial status to this area. He said that an executive committee shall be formed to start work immediately to grant provincial status to Gilgit Baltistan. The Prime Minister assured the federal government will extend all out financial support to the GB government for the implementation of development projects in tourism, power sector, health and education. He said that CPEC passes through GB and its people will get all spread effects of CPEC related projects.
The area can attract large number of local and foreign tourists after putting in place better lodging, food and transportation facilities and above all peace and security. In the past the incident of sectarian violence and terrorism had scared away tourist from the area.
The area has ideal sites for hydel power stations. The provision of cheap electricity will give impetus to fruit processing industry, Currently, high quality of apple and apricot could neither exported nor processed. Every year, fresh fruits are wasted in large quantities, inflicting losses on growers. CPEC roads will facilitate transportation of fresh fruits towards domestic and foreign destinations.
Giving provincial status to Gilgit Baltistan would require passage of constitutional amendment with two-third majority. The government would need the parliamentary support from the opposition. It is really million dollars question as to whether PTI will get that support in the parliament from the opposition in the prevailing charged political atmosphere.
