PTI parliamentarians move Islamabad High Court to secure reserved seats in KP Assembly

F.P. Report

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) parliamentarians have approached the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking their rightful share of reserved seats in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly.

The petition, set for hearing on Thursday before Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, challenges the ECP’s April 5 notification regarding the allocation of reserved seats.

The petition underscored that the April 5 notification has created discrepancies in the composition of the KP Assembly and violates democratic principles by ignoring the parliamentary strength of PTI Parliamentarians in the province.

In their plea, the PTI has demanded that the court should declare the ECP’s April 5 notification illegal and order its correction in line with the March 4 notification, which they claim was the correct basis for seat distribution.

They also demanded that the court direct the ECP to allocate reserved seats to PTI in proportion to their electoral strength in the KP Assembly.

It is newsworthy that the dispute stemmed from the ECP’s decision to deny PTI its share of reserved seats for women and minorities, citing legal technicalities.

The PTI termed this move as politically motivated and aimed at undermining democratic representation.

With the Senate elections scheduled for July 21, the outcome of this case could have significant implications for party positions and voting rights in the upper house of Parliament.

Legal experts suggest that if the court rules in PTI’s favor, it could lead to a reshuffle in the KP Assembly’s composition, impacting upcoming legislative processes.
